I recently returned from San Cristobal, Chiapas where I attended the Midwives Alliance of North America Mexico conference, Saber Nacer. Midwifery in Mexico is relatively unregulated by the government. Parteras in the villages have been helping women have babies for centuries, but now there is a movement in the country to form a national Midwifery Organization in Mexico. This is very exciting news for when midwives unite and become more visible in the communities and in the medical word, maternal/child health will improve. It will be a challenge and a strength in the new organization to preserve the traditional midwifery practices the parteras have been doing for all these years. Pictured above on the right is Cris Alonso, the MANA Mexico rep who is playing and integral role in organizing and growing the practice of midwifery in Mexico, in the middle is Michelle Peixinho, the MANA Midwives of Color rep with little Kaleo (whose 1st Birthday is on July 4th), and me on the left.
I know this comment comes about a year later after your post, but thought I would give it a shot.
ReplyDeleteDo you by ANY chance have a referral to a midwife in Acapulco, Mex. or in Mexico that would travel to Acapulco. I am in desperate need of a midwife! Have not been able to find any on my own.
Thanks!
