I was first introduced to the idea of midwifery by a friend who opted for that model of care for her first birth. The idea intrigued me to the point that I explored midwifery as a choice when I became pregnant. I thought about what types of experiences I wanted to have throughout my pregnancy, such as my prenatal visits because I felt this to be a key part of preparing me for labor and early parenthood. I enjoyed my hour long sessions where my experiences were received, discussed and informed. I also considered what type of birth I wanted to have~ I wanted someone there with the wisdom of previous births but be allowed to have faith in the primal instincts that my body would know what to do. My husband supported my choice for a homebirth with a midwife, as he told me that I was going to be the one doing most of the work, but others react differently. Some family expressed concern and one friend even angrily lectured me. However, I had done my research, and my head, heart and gut gave me the go-ahead. I am so grateful I listened to my own intution because I felt the freedom to make my own birth choices and I had control over my environment and support, which allowed me to deeply trust my body's processes to lead me into motherhood.
