Capitol Visiting Day

Today 150-175 moms, dads, babes, and midwives gathered to spread the news about midwives being the best, most affordable choice to help families have babies. Although there is not specific licensed midwife legislation this session, it is always good for legislators to hear the word midwife and for consumers to share that they think midwifery care is important.  We were also showing support for HB 1107 that will give advanced practice nurses (CNMs, NPs, Nurse anesthetists) autonomous prescriptive authority. This means that these practitioners will be able to prescribe under their own license instead of having to call the prescription in under a supervising doctors license. I am watching this closely as I am currently working on a women's health nurse practitioner degree and hope to be able to prescribe clients with needed medicines without having to send them to see a doctor. From what I can tell, ( I got called away to a birth before actually going to the capitol, I know it's ironic) the day was a huge success! You can see midwifery supporters on the TV news and on the Austin American Statesman website.

Here are some pictures, unfortunately I didn't get any at the actual capitol building.

I nearly shed tears of joy when I entered the room we initially gathered in and saw so many people there who took time to come and support midwifery.

And then upon further looking I saw so many of my wonderful mamas with their little ones, nine in all ( I think). I love how some of these pictures capture perfect mama moments!

My thanks to all of you for coming to help keep midwifery care an option for families in Texas!
